North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson twisted an ankle near the end of a workout Monday with the Washington Wizards after missing a scheduled workout Sunday with the Denver Nuggets.
"I rolled my ankle near the end,"
Lawson said. "I stopped to get the ball and I slipped, but it is not that bad. It will be fine in a couple of days."
Nuggets spokesman Eric Sebastian said Lawson informed the team Saturday that he wouldn't work out, apparently because of a minor injury. Lawson was expected to work out Sunday with Kansas point guard Mario Chalmers. Chalmers showed up, but Lawson didn't. The missed workout came two days after Lawson, 20, was charged with driving after consuming alcohol, violating a noise ordinance and driving with a revoked license in Chapel Hill.
Lawson has declared for the draft but can return for his junior season if he withdraws by June 16.
SOUTH CAROLINA: The athletics department started criminal background checks on prospective coaches and administrators a few months after the NCAA placed the Gamecocks football team on three years' probation. The probation ended Friday.
"Usually, it's done if someone is working around money, students, things like that,"
said school spokesman Russ McKinney.
