UNC - N.C. State Observations
• Some people frown on N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe's habit of calling quick timeouts after an opponent gets a few quick baskets.
Fact is, Lowe does a good job preventing 4-0 runs from becoming 10-0 runs.
• North Carolina coach Roy Williams made the unusual move of sending Tywon Lawson to talk to referee Mike Eades at a timeout after Tywon Lawson's second foul.
It didn't change anything, but at least Tywon Lawson -- and presumably Williams -- got an explanation.
• With Tywon Lawson in foul trouble in the first half, backup point guard Quentin Thomas made his most effective appearance in weeks.
He had two assists, hit a pull-up 15-footer over Engin Atsur and blocked an Atsur shot on the baseline.
• Atsur, the N.C. State senior point guard, might have had his finest half of basketball during the first 20 minutes Wednesday.
He finished the first half with 16 points and 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range.
